 INSTRUCTORS

Jerry

Born Jeremias Velazquez, he grew up listening to the salsa heroes of the 70's: Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe, Eddie Palmieri, and Johnny Pacheco, just to name a few, but also to an eclectic blend of jazz, hip hop, freestyle, rhythm and blues.   Although Jery was born in Humble Park, a Hispanic ghetto in Chicago, he was raised in Puerto Rican tradition. One influenced with hard work and perseverance but also richly rooted in island culture. His ancestor's cornerstone was music. So many well acquainted with an instrument. Each one with a song in their heart and a step that brought them to life.  The love of music, song, and dance was more than a past time, it was innate. By the time Jery was in his late teens he was working alongside many of this generations greatest artist: Brenda K. Star,  DLG, Grupo Mania, Grupo Niche, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Jose Alberto "El Canario",  Marc Anthony, Olga Tanon, and Victor Manuel.  With the growing popularity of salsa music, Jery is still weighing in his love for music as he explores various Afro-Caribbean folk styles of dance. Seizing an opportunity to advance his skills he most recently enlisted with Salsamania. Naturally he moved rapidly among the ranks from student to lead instructor.

Angela

Angela is a fireball of fun on the dance floor.  This young, talented, great dancer has been tearing up the dance floor since Salsamania started.  She is the type of instructor that anyone would want on their team.  She is smart, caring and understanding when it comes to teaching Salsa.   Even though Spanish is not her native tongue she found a way to utilize her Greek and Lebanese heritage to mesh her belly dancing experience with an eclectic mix of Salsa and Afro Cuban Beats.  She is truly a great instructor and is planning on teaching her son Dorian when he becomes of age.

Frank

Frank was raised in Tampa, Florida where his family came to settle in the aftermath of the Cuban revolution. Cradle to many Cuban families, the steps Mambo, Cha-cha-chá, Son, Danzón, and Guaguancó could often be seen in social gatherings and house parties in the Tampa area. Since childhood he has been avidly involved in music and also plays several musical instruments. Cuban music, sometimes referred to as "Salsa", has always been the cultural anthem that unites Cuban Americans with their homeland. For Frank, learning Casino style, a Cuban traditional way of dancing to the beat, has brought him even closer with his roots and he hopes to pass on this tradition to his children as well his students.

Leo & Janette

Leo Florin, director of Salsamania Dance Studios was born and raised in Miami, FL.  Through the majority of his life Leo has always had the rhythm inherited from his late grandfather Juan Rodriguez.  Where he found his beat was at a family wedding where they asked him to perform as part of the entertainment when he was only 12 years old.  Throughout his days in Miami as he trained to learn the unique steps of Salsa, he found his teaching roots.  After noticing that he had a unique way of explaining dance steps, he found it easy to teach other people how to dance.

Now in Tampa, Leo found that a school to give quality instruction in Salsa Casino/Rueda was needed.  The formation of Salsamania in Tampa was an easy solution to a growing number of requests to the way that he teaches.  He teaches with style, passion and the desire to see his students excel where it has never been seen in Tampa.

Leo’s goal for Salsamania is to create a community through music and dance that can come together and work as a family.  Helping each other out as his family did for him in Miami.  The most interesting thing you find about Leo is his love for his students and the joy that he has when they express the same joy for Salsa music that he teaches on a daily basis.

Janette Roque, a director at Salsamania Dance Studios was born and raised in Tampa, FL.  Since the first time that she was introduced to salsa music she has not stopped moving her feet.  Janette was able to particate in dancing in a few sweet 15’s parties and wedding parties.  She learned to dance to different types of music but compared to salsa it just moves you.  So she asked her mother to teach her how to dance.  She gave her a broom and showed the first basic steps; she was there with the broom practicing all day.  As she grew older she was introduced to different styles of salsa.  She danced to the old style of Cuban salsa which are your enchufla (back rocks) and she also learned to danced to freestyle but after dancing to Casino/Rueda Salsa she was hooked.  She found herself enjoying all the different turns that are incorporated in Casino/Rueda.  She found herself teaching a few friends how to dance Casino/Rueda Salsa at her home.  This is something that is enjoyable and to her. She found herself meeting new people, who are now some of her close friends.
